Rotti Seva Kendra – A profitable enterprise

1. Background: Hard work, courage and desire to achieve can make the women to reach heights of success in life. Smt. Sumangala Kembhavi, basically from Lingasgur taluka of Raichur district, presently settled in Dharwad is one such lady who became a successful entrepreneur. Her family was dependent on agriculture and later shifted to Dharwad a decade ago for education of her son. Her husband was working in private sector and earning a meager income. Then she thought that, it is difficult to manage home with that income and started searching for an opportunity which can help in meeting family expenses.

2. Intervention Process: Incidentally she met KVK Scientists and attended few value addition training programmes. After the training, started production of snacks items and selling them to known customers. Sometimes she found it difficult to sell the products.

3. Intervention Technology: In the year 2011-12 she started Shri Basaweshwara Rotti Kendra, near Sarvamangala Hospital, Dharwad under the guidance of KVK Scientists. The locality where she started her centre is in the prime area and gets customers from varied background ranging from students, employees, bachelors, old aged couples etc. The centre runs from 12 PM to 3 PM in the morning and 6 PM to 11 PM in the evening. She prepares hot and soft roties (10 kg) chapaties (5 kg) every day along with crispy kadak roties. Daily morning and evening prepares fresh bhaji from vegetables/pulses to pack along with roties. She keeps stock of chutney powders and pickles as additional items.

4. Impact-Horizontal Spread: The success of this centre has motivated many women to takeup such activity in an area having majority of the students and working families. Dharwad being educational hub, few areas are having colleges and tution classes who become a regular customer.

5. Impact-Economic Gains: She express that, it is a very remunerative enterprise and earning nearly Rs. 30,000/- to 35,000/- per month after deducting all expenses. The sweets and snacks are also prepared and supplied on order basis. Thus finding right market and product has given very good returns to Smt. Sumangala. The efforts of her and guidance of scientists has paid her a good returns.

6. Impact on Employment Generation: She has given employment to two women who assist in roti preparation and manage the shop during her absence also. Now her husband is also assisting her in the shop.
